Cleland is a triple amputee, decorated Vietnam veteran Silver/Bronze stars, Captain, Army 1965-68, Carter appointee to Veterans Administration, a former U.S. Senator (D-GA), and was a co-chair of the Kerry-Edwards campaign of 2004. He refused to call the Carter pardon of draft dodgers, amnesty. Kerry advisor Max Cleland was used to connect the Kerry campaign and perhaps CBS to Bill Burkett, the CBS source who forged documents on George W. Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard. On Oct. 1, 2006, Cleland headlined an Anti-War Rally in support of Congressman John Murtha (D-Pa.), facing attacks from “radical Right wing forces.” These forces challenged Rep. Murtha’s receipt of two Purple Hearts in Vietnam. “We need to end the Swift Boat attacks against men like John Murtha and wring their necks like Chickens.” Cleland supported Obama withdrawal from Iraq.
