James Gilliam USA
Gilliam served in Vietnam from September of 1969 through June of 1970 with the 1st of the 22nd of the 4th Infantry Division. Wounded many times, he earned Combat Infantry Badge, but did not apply for Purple Heart. Gilliam’s book, Life and Death in the Central Highlands: An American Sergeant in the Vietnam War, 1968-1970 is a personal memoir mixed with his impressions of the historical context. After getting out of the Army, Gillam earned his B.A. from Ohio University, M.A. from Case Western Reserve University, and a Ph.D. in Chinese history from Ohio State University. He teaches at Spelman College.
This is a "stump" essay which will be revisited when time permits.
